Hey everybody. Just wanted to keep you guys updated on the upcoming live blog coverage of the Oscars by yours truly. I will be hosting a chat here on Sunday, February 27th from 8pm until the closing credits roll for the biggest awards show on the planet. You can stop by and comment, or just follow along if you prefer. I'm going to attempt to include various interesting links, pictures and polls, but mostly, it will just be a lot of movie talk. Hope you join us.
How do I comment on this?
ReplyDeleteHey guys. Sorry I can't join in, my computer and TV are in separate rooms. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteHey Ben, we missed you tonight. How did you do on Oscar picks. Michael and I both went 13-24.
ReplyDeleteI had 10 right. It should be 11, but I marked Best Actor wrong by mistake! Argh!
ReplyDeleteOverall, not a bad Oscars. I liked the hosts, and most of the wins I felt were deserved. I was really pulling for the social network, though.
Congrats on a successful live blogging event. Enjoyed the commentary while I lasted online.
ReplyDeleteMy overall thoughts about last night's Oscars: I thought the Academy did a good job this year of rewarding films based on merit, appearing less political than they have in past years, and diversifying the films that receive awards, which is always nice. This was evidenced in how unpredictable (relatively speaking) the winners were.
ReplyDeleteHosts: All things considered, I thought they did a fine job. The skits were cute, and Franco's stiffness can be excused when you remember that this is the first time a host has also been a nominee.
My awards for the night are as follows:
Best presenters: Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law

Best acceptance speech: Luke Matheny for God of Love

Another thought: it's a shame The Ghost Writer wasn't nominated for Best Picture, I think it is one of Polanski's finer films, and certainly more deserving than two or three of the nominees I watched.
ReplyDeleteHey Michael. i'd agree with you about the presenters and the acceptance speech. I thought it was weird that they didn't have some straight comedians present anything (besides Billy Cristal/Bob Hope combo). Normally Will Ferrell, Jack Black or somebody does something hilarious.
ReplyDeleteOverall I actually thought it was a pretty mediocre show. As always, it was about an hour too long. And as always, the academy went with the safe choices as opposed to honoring really groundbreaking work.
Thanks for the complement Chip, and to everybody who turned out whether you commented or not.

ReplyDeleteBen - now I understand your choice for Best Actor. When I saw it, I thought, "is he serious?" Maybe you can claim a mulligan on that one, given that you were sick.
ReplyDeleteI got 18 picks right (go me!). I'm sorry I didn't take the opportunity to join your chat (I was watching the show). Overall, I thought the show moved more quickly than normal (in my memory many end around midnight or later), and I agree mostly with Ben's comments. Although I enjoyed The King's Speech the most of all the movies this year, I think the other nominees were worthy, too.
BTW, I don't think James Franco is a super-outgoing guy. He's also probably suffering from severe jet-lag and general fatigue, since he's attending his PhD classes regularly on the east coast during the week, and has been flying back and forth on the weekends for the Oscar promotions and rehearsals. I also liked that this year they chose to go with hosts who didn't take shots at people (with the exception of the Charlie Sheen joke, which you gotta figure he deserves). A well-crafted barb can be funny, but I found this year's hosts refreshing in avoiding that.
PS - Michael, I also was disappointed Ghost Writer wasn't honored with a nomination. I thoroughly enjoyed that film.
